Giving New Life to Damaged Art

Sculpture Repair & Restoration in Akron

Art takes a beating. Whether it’s a monumental outdoor bronze weathering a brutal Ohio winter, a delicate indoor heirloom that took a tumble during a move, or a beloved public landmark showing the heavy toll of time, sculptures eventually need a lifeline. When they do, that’s exactly where I come in.
Hi, I’m John Comunale. While a lot of my days are spent surrounded by sparks and raw materials, creating custom, large-scale sculptures from scratch right here in Akron, a huge part of my passion is saving the pieces that already mean something to the world. To me, restoration isn't just a side job it's a rescue mission for culture, history, and personal memories.
Restoring a sculpture isn't like fixing a dented car bumper or mending a broken fence post. It requires a unique, almost contradictory mix of skills: you need the sensitive eye of an artist, the calculating brain of a structural engineer, and the gritty, hands-on capability of an industrial craftsman. When a statue is damaged, you don't just want it structurally patched up. You want it to look the way its original creator intended, breathing naturally without showing the scars or seams of the repair. That seamless transition between damage and rebirth is exactly what I specialize in achieving.

Why Sculpture Restoration Demands an Artist’s Touch

When an object is built to be art, every curve, texture, and shadow matters. A standard welding shop or general contractor might have the tools to stick two pieces of metal together, but they lack the trained eye to understand how heat distorts a delicate face, or how a harsh grind can permanently erase a master sculptor’s subtle chisel marks.
When you bring a piece to my studio, the process begins with a deep, respectful analysis of the original artist's intent. I study the way the light hits the surface, the specific type of alloy or material used, and the methods available when the piece was first built. This means every weld I lay down, every chemical patina I apply, and every structural rod I insert is done to honor the artwork, not to overpower it. We aren't just erasing damage; we are preserving a story.

If It’s a Sculpture, I Can Fix It

Over the decades, I’ve worked with just about every material, style, and scale imaginable. There is no job too massive, no detail too intricate, and no material too obscure. My Akron studio is fully loaded with heavy-duty fabrication equipment and delicate restoration tools alike, allowing me to handle a massive spectrum of challenges:
Precision Metalwork & Structural Welding

I repair cracked bronze castings, re-weld complex steel or aluminum fabrications, and straighten bent or collapsed internal armatures using specialized, low-heat techniques.

Surface & Finish Restoration

From re-layering faded, oxidized chemical patinas on outdoor bronzes to polishing worn contemporary metals, I restore the original depth of color while stripping away decades of corrosion, pollution, and grime.

Structural Integrity & Public Safety Fixes

Large public art carries public liability. I specialize in reinforcing compromised internal supports, securing loose stone or metal bases, and ensuring that heavy, permanently anchored pieces are entirely safe and stable for the community.

Re-creating Missing Elements

If a section of a sculpture chipped off, shattered, was stolen, or went missing years ago, I can re-sculpt the missing anatomy or abstract geometry from scratch, casting or fabricating it to blend flawlessly into the surviving structure.

True Material Versatility

I don't limit myself to just one medium. Whether your piece is made of traditional foundry bronze, structural steel, delicate carved stone, modern resins, fiberglass, plastics, or complex mixed-media assemblages I’ve seen it, I understand its chemistry, and I can fix it.

Respecting the Art, Overcoming the Damage

My philosophy on restoration is incredibly straightforward: do right by the artwork, and do right by the client. Whether you are bringing me a priceless family heirloom that has been passed down through three generations, a striking centerpiece for a corporate headquarters, or a massive municipal monument that defines a city park, I treat the project with the exact same level of hyper-focused respect.
I don't believe in quick fixes or cosmetic cover-ups that will flake away or fail in a couple of years. I focus heavily on utilizing archival-grade, weather-resistant materials and time-tested structural techniques. The goal is always to solve the underlying vulnerability so that the piece doesn't just look good today, but remains protected, vibrant, and structurally sound for generations to come.
